WATKINS (RICHARD), printer in London, was an apprentice to William Powell { POWELL, William ‹ LBT 08269 › } and was made free on April 27th, 1557. He served the Stationers' Company in various capacities, twice as Renter, four times as Warden and twice as Master. He began to print in 1561 when his address is given as St. Paul's Churchyard; at a later date he was in Cheapside near the little Conduit. In 1569 he married Katherine { JUGGE, Katherine (mar. WATKINS) ‹ LBT 03233 › } daughter of Richard Jugge { JUGGE, Richard ( - 1577) ‹ LBT 07912 › }. [London Marriage Licenses, p. 42.] He printed a large number of books up to about 1598 when he appears to have been reduced to poor circumstances. As an apprentice of his, Thomas Grantham { GRANTHAM, Thomas ( - 1603) ‹ LBT 08699 › } was transferred to George Bishop { BISHOP, George ( - 1610) ‹ LBT 08608 › } in June, 1599, it is probable that he died in that year.
