WATERSON (RICHARD), stationer in London, was a member of the Stationers' Company at the time of its incorporation, having taken up his freedom in December, 1555, but he is not mentioned in the original list. He was apparently an assistant to Thomas Duxwell { DUXWELL, Thomas ‹ LBT 07393 › } as we learn from the following passage in Foxe's Book of Martyrs [VIII, p. 724] "One W. Gie servant with master Revet, merchant, bought a Bible and service book of Richard Waterson who then dwelt with master Duixile in Paul's churchyard." For this offence Bonner ordered Gie and Waterson to be beaten. Waterson is several times mentioned in the Registers as taking apprentices, and was frequently punished for keeping open his shop on Sundays. He married Alice { BURTON, Alice (mar. COLDOCK) ( - 1616) ‹ LBT 05090 › }, daughter of Simon Burton and had a son Simon Waterson { WATERSON, Simon ( - 1635) ‹ LBT 08687 › }, the well-known printer. He died in 1563 [Dugdale, Hist. of St. Paul's Cathedral, p. 128] and his widow married successively two stationers Francis Coldock { COLDOCK, Francis ( - 1603) ‹ LBT 08163 ›} and Isaac Byng { BINGE, Isaac ( - 1604) ‹ LBT 07343 › }.
MLT Note: Possibly an apprentice or assistant to Thomas Duxwell (LBT/07393), punished for selling Bible & service book (Foxe, Book of Martyrs, viii.724). Frequently punished for keeping shop on Sundays. ---
