TOY (JOHN), printer in London, appears to have printed only one book. This was an edition of the Gradus comparationum [Bodl.] which has the following colophon "Imprinted at London in Poules chyrche yard, at the sygne of saynte Nycolas, by me John Toye. The yere of our lorde God M.D.XXXI . the xxx day of May." At the end is John Skot's device so that the book may have been really printed by him. In 1534 an edition of Stanbridge's Shorter Accidence [U.L.C.] was printed for Toy by Martin de Keyser at Antwerp. There is a letter in existence [Letters and papers of Henry VIII, vol. vii, p. 252] written in 1534 from Leonard Cox to "The Goodman Toy at the sign of St Nicholas in Powles Churchyard" concerning some translations of Erasmus' paraphrases to be printed, doubtless the paraphrase of the Epistle to Titus which Cox translated. There are some reasons for believing that Toy married Elizabeth { SUTTON, Elizabeth ‹ LBT 06421 › }, the widow of Nicholas Sutton { SUTTON, Nicholas ( - 1531) ‹ LBT 29169 › }, whose house in Paul's Churchyard afterwards belonged to Humphrey Toy { TOY, Humphrey ( - 1577) ‹ LBT 08606 › }. He apparently died in 1535 and his will was proved in that year. [P.C.C., 23, Hogen.]
MLT Note: Duff, E.G. (1905) - There are some reasons for believing that toy married Elizabeth (LBT/06421), the widow of Nicholas Sutton (LBT/29169), whose house in Paul's Churchyard afterwards belonged to Humphrey Toy (LBT/08606).
