Further Notes
Tooke's period as Treasurer - The death of John Leigh, Treasurer of the English Stock, was announced at the meeting of 6 Sep 1686 and Tooke, who had previously attended Court fairly regularly, soon ceased attending, perhaps because one of the conditions set out for the position on 28 Feb 1687 was that if the Treasurer (to be renamed Warehousekeeper) was a member of the Court he was not to sit as an Assistant while holding the position. Significantly, although Tooke was present at the meeting of 1 Mar 1687 at which he was chosen Warehousekeeper over Obediah Blagrave, Treasurer 'pro tem' from 12 Oct 1686, he was not listed among the Assistants. However, being still a nominal though inactive Assistant, Tooke was subject to being removed from and restored to the Court along with his fellow Assistants, though his brief reappearance at meetings, and particularly his service as Under Warden in 1688 while he was still Warehousekeeper, can only be put down to the troubled times. Tooke was eventually suspended as Warehousekeeper on 16 Jul 1702 and finally discharged on 5 Oct 1702 [see entries below], though by that time he had long since ceased to be thought of as a member of the Court --- Under Wardenship - see comment above; the 27 Nov 1688 restoration of the Corut to its 26 Mar 1684 form led to new elections in which Tooke was replaced as Under Warden by Robert Clavell. --- C.B. 1 Jun 1702 = "--- Stock had received a greate prejudice ---" --- C.B. 6 Jul 1702 = "--- Stock had bin wronged to a great value --- The Stockkeepers had given Mr.Took a Coppy of the Charge against him and at ye same time desire his Answer thereto Mr.Took was sent for and examined to severall Articles and Items of the said Account But giving noe Satisfactory Acct. he was ordered to withdraw --- [to meet again and Tooke to give full answer - next 5th] --- C.B. 14 Jul 1702 = "--- had met --- Ordered - That all the Partners of the English Stock bee sumoned to meet on ffryday next att Three a Clock afternoon And That ye matters in Charge against the said Mr.Tooke be thin laid before them for their advice and concurrance" --- C.B. 16 Jul 1702 = " --- plainely appeare under the hands of the Printers who Print ye Books for the said Partners That ye said Printers had bin paid for Printing Bookes to a very greate value more than Mr.Took their Treasurer had Acoompted for upon which the said Mr.Tooke being called for did appeare and was acquainted with the said Charge --- Unanimously agreed and Resolved That the said Partners had bin greatly injured And the Court of Assistants were desired to take the most proper Method they should be advised to discover who had done them the wrong and to endeavour to procure satisfaction for the same --- Mr.Took suspended from being any longer concerned as Treasurer for the said [ ] And that hee should upon the Wednesday following make up his Accts. With the Stockkeepers And should then deliver upto them or to such persons as they should appointe the warehouse and all the bookes monys and all other things that were in his Possession and did belong to the sd Partners ---" --- C.B. 23 Jul 1702 = " --- Demanded of Mr.Took to Deliver up the Warehouse and the Books and other things therein But that he refused doe to doe and therefore Desired their Advise and assistance therein --- " [Adjourned] --- C.B. 5 Oct 1702 = " --- That upon Examination of the Management of our Stock called the English Stock whereinto Mr Benjamine Took was Elected Servant and Manager. Wee Doe find That hee hath mismanaged the same and Embezelled great part thereof, Whereupon wee have thought fitt to Discharge him from our Service in the said affair And hee is hereby discharged from our Service therein accordingly. And further That Mr.Took bee immediately required to Deliver upp to the Master Wardens and Stockkeepers the Possession of the house and Warehose, And the Keys of the severall other Warehouses. And all the Books papers monys and other things which he hat in his Custody relating to the English Stock." --- C.B. 9 Oct 1702 ="--- Ordered That the Clerk do forthwith give notice to all the Tenants of the English Stock That they doe not pay anymore Rent to Mr.Took the late Treasurer. And twas further Ordered That ye Salary of the Warehousekeeper for the future shall bee no more than 60 per Annum But hee is to have the same house as Mr.Took the late Treasurer had rent Free." ---
