THOMAS (JOHN), bookseller in London, 1582-7. The identity of this stationer is not quite clear. He could hardly have been the John Thomas { THOMAS, John ‹ LBT 07048 › }, son of John Thomas of Southwark, smith, who was apprentice to Christopher Butler { BUTLER, Cristopher ‹ LBT 07039 › } for ten years from May 26th, 1577, as he did not take up his freedom until his full time had expired on July 31st, 1587 [Arber, ii. 77, 701], whereas the John Thomas now under notice took his first apprentice, William Erle { ERLE, William ‹ LBT 08545 › }, on March 29th, 1582 [Arber, ii. 111], and was admitted into the Livery in 1585 [Arber, i. 508]. He died some time at the end of the year 1587 or the beginning of 1588, as his will was proved in the Court of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's on March 1st, 1587/8. He left four sons, one of whom was named John. Ralph Newbery { NEWBERY, John ( - 1604) ‹ LBT 08131 › } was his brother-in-law, and to William Erle, his apprentice, he left twenty shillings [Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's, Book B, fol. 310]. His widow afterwards married a man of the name of Hill [Arber, ii. 709].
