11 Oct 1687 Court Restored - Smith was named on 11 Oct 1687 as one of the Assistants "at the time of the surrender of the Charter" who is to be restored, but could not be summoned "for many years having lived far out of town". All surviving members of the Court as of 26 Mar 1684 were called to meet on this day, but Smith is not named among those who appeared.

Further Notes

Resignation - On 26 Mar 1684 Smith was the only one of twenty-four Assistants not named as having resigned his place to the Master and Wardens. Presumably he was overlooked simply because he had attended the Court only once in the preceding eight years and not at all since May 1678. --- Restoration - Moreover, though he never did attend after 1678, he was named on 11 Oct 1687 as one of the Assistants "at the time of the late surrend[er] of the Charter" who was to be restored. However, he could not then be summoned "for may yeares having lived far out of towne"". --- Removed - Smith was also one of the seven named Assistants removed from the Court "by his Maties Ord[er]" on 1 Mar 1688 and was thus implicitly restored to his place in the 27 Nov 1688 restoration of the Court to its 26 Mar 1684 form, though he was almost certainly not summoned. ---
