SCARLET (THOMAS), printer and bookseller in London, 1590-6. Son of William Scarlett of Wardon, co. Hereford, yeoman. Apprentice to Thomas East { EAST, Thomas (1540 - 1608) ‹ LBT 07395 › } for eight years from March 25th, 1577, and took up his freedom in the Company of Stationers on October 12th, 1586 [Arber, ii. 75,699]. Thomas Scarlet made his first book entry on August 17th, 1590 [Arber, ii. 558], but he appears to have been an unruly member of the Company. In 1591 he was directed to appear before the Archbishop of Canterbury, no doubt for some illegal printing [Arber, i. 548], and again in 1593 he was fined for keeping an apprentice seven years without binding him [Arber, ii. 864]. On August 9th, 1596, he surrendered some of his copyrights to Thomas Creede { CREEDE, Thomas ( - 1619) ‹ LBT 07400 › } [Arber, iii. 68]. He must have died soon afterwards, as his widow {- name not known SCARLET, (Unknown) ‹ LBT 30746 › } surrendered her rights to Cuthbert Burby { BURBY, Cuthbert ( - 1607) ‹ LBT 08823 › } on September 6th, 1596. According to Sir J. Lambe, Ralph Blower { BLOWER, Ralph ( - 1626) ‹ LBT 08574 › } and George Shaw { SHAWE, George ( - 1610) ‹ LBT 08681 › } bought the printing business of Henry [? Thomas] Scarlet [Arber, iii. 702].
