PURFOOT (THOMAS), printer in London, was born in 1518, so that he would probably become free of the Stationers' Company about 1542. In the list in the charter he occurs twenty-third. Although no book is given under his name by Herbert before 1564, a book was printed for him in 1546 by Richard Lant { LANT, Richard ‹ LBT 07965 › }, where he is spoken of as dwelling "in Poules Churchyard at the sygne of Lucrece." He dwelt at the sign of Lucretia in St. Nicholas shambles within the new rentes, and also "without Newgate over against St. Sepulchre's Church." He is said to have gone on printing until 1615: in which case he must have been at least ninety-seven when he died. There were however at least three printers of the name and they may have been confused.
