POWELL (HUMPHREY), printer in London and Dublin, carried on business in the former city in the year 1548 when he printed some eight books at his shop "above Holborn Conduit." Whether his business was not a success or from some other cause he migrated to Ireland and there is an entry in the Acts of the Privy Council under the date July 18th, 1550, "A warrant to - deliver xxli unto Powell the printer given him by the King's Majestie towardes his setting up in Irelande. " [Acts, vol. iii, p. 84.] Powell, who styled himself King's Printer set up in business "in the great toure by the Crane" and issued in 1551 an edition of the Book of Common Prayer. Probably much of Powell's work consisted of broadsides now lost, for nothing is known of his work for ten years. In 1561 he printed a broadside against Shane O'Neill and in 1564 another against the O'Connors. In 1566 he issued his last book a tract of eight leaves [T.C.D.] called A Brefe Declaration of certein Principall Articles of Religion, and his address is given as St. Nicholas Street. He was an original member of the Stationers' Company and most probably a near relation of Thomas Powell { POWELL, Thomas ‹ LBT 08267 › }, Berthelet's { BERTHELET, Thomas ( - 1555) ‹ LBT 06915 › } nephew, as he came into possession of, and used, some founts of type which had belonged to Berthelet.
