PEPWELL (ARTHUR), stationer in London, was admitted a freeman on either August 19th, 1556, or March 8th, 1557. For the first few years almost all the entries in the Registers relating to him refer to fines for various misdemeanours. In 1562 he was received into the Livery. In 1565-66 he had a license for printing a ballad by Churchyard and a copy of this ballad printed for him by A. Lacy { LACYE, Alexander ‹ LBT 07958 › } is in the library at Britwell. At this time he was one of the Renters of the Company. Pepwell died at the end of 1568 and his will was proved on January 15th, 1569. He left a widow and two sons Henry and Humphry, both under age who were to receive two-thirds of his property. Various other bequests were left to relatives and to charities. Pepwell seems to have been twice married, first to Rose Toy { TOY, Rose (mar. PEPWELL) ‹ LBT 06417 › } daughter of Robert Toy { TOY, Robert ( - 1556) ‹ LBT 08604 › } the stationer and secondly to Joan Chambers { CHAMBERS, Joan (mar. PEPWELL) ‹ LBT 03227 › }.
