Further Notes

The Times, 5 Aug 1825, p.3, col.f On Wednesday morning, after a procrastinated illness, at his residence, north-side Clapham-common, Thomas Newton, of Warwick-square. He was many years agent to the provincial press, and a man highly respected by a numerous circle of friends, by whom his loss will long be serverley felt and deeply lamented. --- Gents.Mag., Aug 1825, p.186 Thomas Newton, Esq. Aug 3 [Died] At his house , on Clapham Common, of the gout in his stomach, to which disorder he had been a martyr for several years, and which baffled every attempt of the faculty to subdue, Thomas Newton, Esq., of Warwick-square, Newgate-street, many years Agent for the Newspapers published in every part of the kingdom. This kind of agency was begun upwards of forty years ago by the late Mr.William Tayler, with whom Mr.Newton became a partner, and who created a considerable increase of business by a circulation of the Advertisements from Lottery Contractors and other species of speculation with which the country has for a series of years been so abundantly supplied. The success he met with arose from the correctness of his accompts and the rectitude of his dealings, and enabled him, notwithstanding a multitude of competitors, to bring up a large family in a most respectable way. Mr.Newton was a native of Hereford, to which place he was much attached. He was a man of strong mind, and whenever the intervals from his painful disorder would permit, a pleasant and facetious companion. --- Timperley, C.H. (1842), p.896 1825, Aug.3. Died, Thomas Newton, newspaper agent, of Warwick-square, London. He was a native of Hereford, and died at Clapham. William Tayler had commenced the business of newspaper agency about 1785, and with whom Mr.Newton had been in partnership. ---
