MIERDMAN (STEPHEN), printer in Antwerp, London and Emden, first appears in 1543 when he issued the first edition of the New Testament translated into Spanish by Franzisco de Enzinas. The book is beautifully printed in Roman letter with good woodcut illustrations, but little else is known of the printer's work at Antwerp. A very full account of the printing of this book with some curious details will be found in a work written by Enzinas himself, Histoire de l'estat du Pais Bas; et de la religion d'Espagne, 1558 [p. 66, et seqq.]. By 1549 Mierdman had come over and settled in England along with many other foreign refugees and is entered in that year in the Returns of Aliens as living in St. Mary-at-Hill Parish, Billingsgate Ward. [R. of A., I, 161.] In 1550 he took out letters of denization dated October 29th [Pat. 4 Edw. VI, p. 4, m. 2] and is also entered along with his wife Elizabeth { MIERDMAN, Elizabeth ‹ LBT 06377 › } in the lists of members of the Dutch Church. He seems to have set up printing on quite a large scale and employed a number of foreign journeymen, no doubt fellow-refugees. Between 1550 and 1552 he issued a considerable number of books, at least twelve being known, the majority being tracts in Latin, Dutch or French either relating to, or written by members of the reformed Dutch Church settled in London under John A Lasco. The two English books which he printed are The market or fayre of usurers, and Turner's New herball, with the names of herbes in Greek Latin English Dutch Frenche. Many of his books were to be sold by John Gybkyn { GYBKYN, John ( - 1586) ‹ LBT 28268 › }, a foreign stationer in St. Paul's Churchyard. No dated book of Mierdman's is known printed in London after 1552 and on the accession of Mary, along with many others he fled again to the Continent settling after some wandering at Emden, where he took the oath of citizenship April 26th, 1554, and is entered in the Burgerbuch as "Stheven Mermann uth Brabant." At Emden he printed several books.
