Further Notes

Beaven, p.211 - his resingnation of his Aldermanry followed on the appointment of a Committee to consider the circumstances under which he had been condemned in his absence by a Belgian court of Justice (on the appeal of the State prosecutor from a verdict of acquittal in a lower Court) to fine and imprisonment for alleged fraud committed by him as a Deirector of the Great Luxembourg Railway. He challenged the fullest investigation into the bacts, but the Committee being unable to compel attendance of foreign witnesses, he resigned his gown in a letter to the Lord Mayor which was at the same time dignified and pathetic, and the Committee was then dissolved without reporting. ---
