LOWNES (WILLIAM), bookseller in London, 1579-1605. This stationer was a member of the Lownes family of Astbury in Cheshire and was perhaps the uncle of Humphrey { LOWNES, Humphrey ( - 1630) ‹ LBT 08023 › } and Matthew Lownes { LOWNES, Matthew ( - 1625) ‹ LBT 07992 › }; but what relation he was to Thomas I { LOWNES, Thomas ( - 1609) ‹ LBT 08025 › } and III { prob. LOWNES, Thomas ( - 1609) ‹ LBT 08025 › again } is uncertain. Owing to the loss of the Register covering the period from 1571 to 1576, there is no record of his apprenticeship, but he was admitted to the freedom on January 19th, 1578/9, by Mistress Toy { REVELL, Margaret (mar. TOY) ‹ LBT 03271 › } the widow of Humphrey Toy { TOY, Humphrey ( - 1577) ‹ LBT 08606 › }, who is believed to have come from Wales [Arber, ii. 679]. William Lownes began taking apprentices on March 30th, 1579 [Arber, ii. 90], both Humphrey Lownes and Thomas Lownes Ill, his kinsmen, serving their time with him. In 1590 he entered in the Registers a sermon preached by the Revd. Edward Suckling in Norwich Cathedral, but no copy of the book is known. The date of his death is unknown, but it took place before 1605, when his son Thomas II { LOWNES, Thomas ( - 1610) ‹ LBT 08024 › } was admitted to the freedom of the Company "per patrimonium" by Mistress Lownes { LOWNES, Elizabeth ‹ LBT 03267 › }, widow of William Lownes [Arber, ii. 738]. He also had a son John { LOWNES, John ‹ LBT 10370 › }, mentioned in the will of Matthew Lownes. His will has not been found, neither is the position of his premises known.
