LOBLEY, LOBBLE or LOBEL (MICHAEL), stationer in London, is first mentioned in 1531 amongst the persons who abjured. [Foxe, IV, pp. 585-6.] He is described as an assistant to Pepwell { PEPWELL, Henry ( - 1541) ‹ LBT 28281 › } and the articles against him were that he, being at Antwerp, bought certain books inhibited as the Revelation of Antichrist, the Obedience of a Christian Man, the Wicked mammon, Frith against Purgatory; also for speaking against images and purgatory. A little later his wife { LOBLE, (Unknown) ‹ LBT 06397 › } was in trouble on religious matters, and he himself, according to Bonner was much vexed and troubled by Bishop Stokeslaye. [Foxe, V, p. 412.]
In 1539 he was one of the booksellers who sold Hilsey's Primer, and by that time he was settled in St. Paul's Churchyard at the sign of St. Michael. Herbert quotes an Almanack, probably of 1545 as printed by him, but he does not appear to have practised printing himself, and his other books were printed by John Wayland { WAYLAND, John ‹ LBT 02902 › }, H. Sutton { SUTTON, Henry ( - 1581) ‹ LBT 08527 › }, R. Hall { HALL, Roland ( - 1563) ‹ LBT 00123 › } and Owen Rogers { ROGERS, Owen ‹ LBT 08365 › }. His name occurs in the list of members of the Stationers' Company. Herbert says of him [p. 569] "He appears to have been a very orderly member of his company, subscribing x. s. towards the necessaryexpences at their first establishment; and was fined only twice, once for his late appearance on a court-day, and another time for his non-attendance on the Lord Mayor on Christmas-day, being thereunto warned, vi.d. In Feb. 1557-8 he made William Lobble { LOBBLE, William ‹ LBT 08002 › } his apprentice free.
He was upper warden of the company 1 Eliz. when she confirmed their charter, and again in the year 1562. In Aug. 1560, soon after his first wardenship expired, he was, with Mr Judson { JUDSON, John ( - 1589) ‹ LBT 07885 › }, the new under warden, in the counter, by command of the Lord Mayor; on what account does not appear in the company's book; however they paid them their charges.
In the latter part of his life he is found to be so poor as not to be able fully to discharge his note for 7£. which he owed the company; but paying 3£ the rest was forgiven him by the whole table." He died in 1567, and his will is preserved in the Registers of the Commissary of London at Somerset House.
