LE ROUX or ROWSE (JEAN), printer in London, was a native of Normandy, and probably one of the large family of printers of that name settled there. He is first mentioned in December, 1536, when he gave evidence in a case relating to an attack on a certain Frenchman and he is there called "John de Rowsse of Normandy, printer, dwellingin the parish of St. Brigide." [Letters and papers of Henry VIII, vol. xi, p. 537.] He lived with his wife Marion { LE ROUX, Marion ‹ LBT 06407 › } in Shoe Lane, his next three neighbours being all bookbinders and is entered thrice in the Subsidy Rolls in 1541, 1544 and 1549. In this last year his goods were valued at ten pounds. [R. of A., I, pp. 56, 94, 181.] He is perhaps identical with" John Rowse, aged 70 years, born in Normandy: in England 52 years" who took out letters of denization July 1st, 1544. [Westm. Deniz. Roll, 36 Henry VIII.]
