LETTOU (JOHN), printer in London, was the first to introduce the art into that city where he began to print in 1480. It is probable from his name he was originally from Lithuania, but he appears to have learnt to print in Rome, for the type with which he started to print in London was used just previously in Rome by a certain John Bull of Bremen. Lettou's first production was an Indulgence and this was followed by an edition of Antonius Andreae super XII libros metaphisice Aristotelis. In 1481 he printed an edition of Thomas Wallensis super Psalterium which like the earlier book was printed at the expense of a certain William Wilcock, either a stationer or a patron. About 1482 Lettou joined in partnership with William de Machlinia { MACHLINIA, William de ‹ LBT 30054 › }, and together they printed a few legal works. Their place of business was by the church of All Saints. After this time Lettou's name is not found. [Duff, Early Printed Books, pp. 160, 161. Printers of London and Westminster, pp. 34-9. D.N.B.]
