MIDDLETON (WILLIAM), printer in London, succeeded Robert Redman { REDMAN, Robert ( - 1540) ‹ LBT 29164 › } at the sign of the George in Fleet Street after Redman's widow { PICKERING, Elizabeth ‹ LBT 06401 › } was married to Ralph Cholmondeley { }, and was admitted a freeman on July 5th, 1541. In the same year he issued his first dated book and, like his predecessors in the same house, issued numerous law books. In April, 1543, along with several other printers, he was brought before the Privy Council "for printing off suche bokes as wer thowght to be unlawfull, contrary to the proclamation" and was committed to the Fleet, but liberated after a fortnight's imprisonment. He was however compelled to pay a fine and send in a list of all books and ballads which he had printed and sold within three years. He printed a very large number of books up to 1547, in June of which year he died, and his will dated June 4th was proved on the 17th of the same month. He left his property to his wife Elizabeth { MIDDLETON, Elizabeth (mar. POWELL) ‹ LBT 06398 › } who testified her sorrow by marrying, within two months, another printer William Powell { POWELL, William ‹ LBT 08269 › }. Middleton used two devices, the smaller consists of two half-length winged figures supporting a shield on which is a tun inscribed with an M, a W below and his mark above. The other contains a similar shield hanging from a fruit tree and supported by two figures ending with the legs of goats and tails of dragons, wIth the name in full below on a ribbon Wyllyam Myddylton.
