H.G.Pollard queried [annotation in his copy of Duff] Duff's assumption that Toy must have been freed before 1534 because his son was freed by patrimony. He queried whether he was a member of the Tylers Company quoting "Midsx & Hert. NQ. Vol.iv, p.69 (April 1898). Though it must be noticed that in his will he left "fortie shillings" to the Stationers' Company. --- Toy may have come from Shropshire - see Plomer "Wills" ---"to the poor of Mortilmas Cliberie [?Mortimer Cleobury Salop] fourtie shillings which I will shall be distributed amongst them by the discretion of my broth Sir Edward viccar there". ---

TOY (ROBERT), printer in London, must have been free of the Stationers' Company before 1534, since his son was made free by patrimony in 1558. He was in business from 1542 up to 1555 issuing about twenty-six books, most of which were printed for him by others. He lived in St. Paul's Churchyard next to Thomas Petyt { PETYT, Thomas ‹ LBT 00136 › } at a house with the sign of the Bell. His first wife { TOY, (Unknown) ( - 1546) ‹ LBT 03268 › } by whom he had two children, Robert and Rose { TOY, Rose (mar. PEPWELL) ‹ LBT 06417 › }, died before 1546, for on January 22nd of that year he married a second wife Elizabeth Scampion { SCAMPION, Elizabeth (mar. TOY) ( - 1565) ‹ LBT 03269 › } of St. Margaret's Westminster. [Marriage Licenses, Faculty Office, p. 6.] Toye died at the beginning of 1556 and his will dated February 5th was proved March 4th. [Plomer, Wills, pp. 12, 13.] He had considerable property in St. Paul's Churchyard which he left to his wife and children. His daughter Rose afterwards married Arthur Pepwell { PEPWELL, Arthur ( - 1569) ‹ LBT 08225 › }. [D.N.B.]
