SUTTON (EDWARD), printer in London, was an apprentice to John Reynes { REYNES, John ( - 1542) ‹ LBT 28236 › } who left him five pounds in books, and afterwards to Lucy Reynes { REYNES, Lucy ( - 1548) ‹ LBT 05089 › } who left him one pound. (Plomer, Wills, pp. 6, 8.] His first printed book, the Treatise of the New India, was issued in 1553 from his house in Lombard Street with the sign of the Cradle. On the incorporation of the Stationers' Company he appears fifty-second on the list and was taken into the livery in 1561. He printed up to 1568, though he did not issue many books. He was also a bookbinder, as we learn from the accounts of St. Mary Woolnoth [Registers, p. xxi] "1557 Item paide Edward Sutton bookbinder for two bookes called the twoo Antisymes xls." He died at the beginning of 1569-70 and was buried on January 30th at St. Mary Woolnoth. He had seven children Rose, John, Henry, Jane, Mary, Thomas, Lewis, several of whom died young. His will dated 1569 was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury [23, Sheffeld] and in it his address is given as "Frier Lane otherwyse grenewiche lane."
