CUTTIER (PHILIPE), bookbinder in Oxford and London, came to England about 1551. He is entered in the two returns' of aliens of 1571, "Philippe Cuttier, a denison, bokebynder, and his wife, in England xxti yeares, and in the said warde [Blackfriars, Farringdon Without] viij yeares; one servaunt a Frenchman, and two children." [R. of A., I, 413.] "Philippe Cuttier, howsholder, bookbynder, came into this realme about xx yeares paste." [R. of A., II, 14.] His name is not found in the lists of Denizations. He was apparently settled first at Oxford, for, on October 28th, 1558, "Philip Cutture bookbinder of Oxford" was bound over in £10 not to reveal State secrets to the French king. [Turner, Records, p. 274.] Immediately after this he went to London, becoming a journeyman with Thomas Purfoot { PURFOOT, Thomas (1518 - ) ‹ LBT 08282 › }, and was sworn a brother of the Stationers' Company in 1559. [Arber, I, 100.J He was fined by them fourpence in 1567-68. [Arber, I, 367.] He probably died in 1578, for an apprentice who was bound to him in March to learn bookbinding was transferred in August to Lewis Seignor { SEIGENOR, Lewes ( - 1579) ‹ LBT 08394 › }. [Arber, II, 83.]
