KEMMYSE (LEWIS), bookbinder in London, came to England about 1535. He took out letters of denization in 1544 "July I, Lewes Kemmyse, bookbinder, born in Rone. Married to a French woman { KEMMYSE, Ellyn ‹ LBT 06402 › }. In England 9 years." [Westm. Deniz. Roll, 36 Hen. VIII] In 1564 his goods were valued at twenty shillings. In 1567-68 he was fined twelve pence by the Stationers' Company for keeping another man's servant. [Arber, I, 367.] In 1571 he is entered in St. Andrew's Parish, Holborn "Lewesse Kemysse, Frenchman, in England xxxviii yere, denyzon, and Ellyn his wyfe, Douchwoman, and hathe bene in England xvj yere, dwellinge in the parishe of St. Androwes xxvj yere, booke bynder. Stephan Keamysse his man." [R. of A., I, 425'] There were also two sons Thomas and Lewes. In 1576 "Lewes Comes" was still living in St. Andrew's Holborn, but by 1582 he was dead and "Ellin Comes, widowe" is entered instead. A fine early binding roll with the initials L. K. may perhaps have belonged to this binder. The house in which he lived belonged to Berthelet { BERTHELET, Thomas ( - 1555) ‹ LBT 06915 › }, and he may have been in his employment as a bookbinder.
