KELE (RICHARD), printer in London, began to print in 1542, when he issued an edition of the Prymer in Englysh. On April 8th, 1543, Kele along with several other printers was summoned before the Privy Council for printing unlawful books and sent to the Fleet. He was freed on April 23rd, but was compelled to pay a fine and also send in a return of what books and ballads he had bought and sold in the space of three years. Up to 1546 Kele printed "at the long shop in the Poultry under St. Mildred's Church" issuing from there some of Skelton's works, the Mirror or glasse of helthe and one or two other books. By 1547 he had moved to the Eagle in Lombard Street and there he continued until 1552. He printed little tor himself and most of his work was done by W. Copland { COPLAND, William ( - 1568) ‹ LBT 07238 › }, W. Seres { SERES, William ( - 1580) ‹ LBT 08396 › } or R. Wyer { WYER, Richard ‹ LBT 30125 › }. Kele died in 1552 and his will dated September l0th was proved on October 19th. He was apparently a young man and his three children were under age. His brother John { KELE, John ‹ LBT 07930 › } to whom he left the lease of the Long Shop and twenty pounds in books was still an appprentice. Among other legatees were Richard Kele an uncle, Richard Lant { LANT, Richard ‹ LBT 07965 › }, Mark Norton, John Allde { ALLDE, John (1531 - 1584) ‹ LBT 07935 › } and four other apprentices, and considerable sums were given to charities. [Plomer, Wills, pp. 9-10.] The will of a Richard Kele stationer of London dated 1564 is amongst the wills proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.
