DUFF, E.G. (1905), p.82

JUGGE (RICHARD), printer in London, is supposed to have been born at Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire and to have been educated at Eton, whence he passed in 1531 to King's College. On October 4th, 1541, he was admitted a freeman of the Stationers' Company, and about 1547 began to print in St. Paul's Churchyard at the sign of the Bible. He had license to print the New Testament, the prices of which were fixed by the Privy Council in June, 1552. After the incorporation of the Stationers' Company he occupied an important position in it, being a Warden in 1560, 1563, and 1566, and Master four times between 1568 and 1574. On the accession of Queen Elizabeth he became royal printer conjointly with Cawood { CAWOOD, John (1514 - 1572) ‹ LBT 07101 › }. He printed in 1568 the first edition of the Bishops' Bible, remarkable for the beautiful copperplate portraits in it. Jugge's device was the figure of a pelican feeding her young. He resided first in St. Paul's Churchyard, but about 1573 moved to Newgate Market. He died in 1577 and his will was proved October 23rd of that year. [Plomer, Wills, p. 24.] He left to Joan { JUGGE, Joan ( - 1588) ‹ LBT 03176 › } his widow a third part of his goods, another third to his children, not mentioned by name, but one, Katherine, married Richard Watkins { WATKYNS, Richard ( - 1599) ‹ LBT 08278 › } May 3rd, 1569. (London Marriage Licenses, p. 42]. Other daughters were Elizabeth and Anne and there was a son John { JUGGE, John ‹ LBT 07909 › } also a member of the Stationers' Company. John Wight { WIGHT, John ( - 1589) ‹ LBT 00149 ›} and William Norton { NORTON, William (1527 - 1593) ‹ LBT 08157 › } were appointed overseers. [D.N.B.]
