8 Jul 1756 = GLDA (9 Jul 1756) - Yesterday at noon Mr.Ilive stood on the pillory at the Royal Exchange, pursuant to his sentence for writing and publishing a book entitled, Modest remarks on the Bishop of London's Discussions. --- 2 Nov 1762 = C.B. - The Master Acquainted the Court that Christopher Norris, Thomas Norwood Ashfield, Freemen and Jacob Ilive Freeman and Liveryman of this Company having in Consequence of a pretended Election among the Freemen at Large taken upon them the Style and pretended to do the business of Master and Wardens in Opposition to the By laws and Antient Custom of the Company by which those Officers have fortime out of mind been Chosen by and out of the Court of Assistants and the said Christopher Norris, Thomas Norwood Ashfield and Jacob Ilive or some of them having applied to Sir Thomas Harrison the Chamberlain of this City to Inroll the Indentures of an apprentice alleged to be bound before them as Master and Wardens at some of their Meetings the said Chamberlain (having had Notice of the due election of the present Master and Wardens Chosen by the Court) appointed to hear all parties on the twenty third day of September last when the present Master and Wardens and also the said Christopher Norris, Thomas Norwood Ashfield and Jacob Ilive attended, and the said Jacob Ilive Alledged that the said Christopher Norris, Thomas Norwood Ashfield and himself were the Master and Wardens duly elected pursuant to the direction of this companys Charter and that by the By Law in pursuance of which the Court of Assistants have from time to time Chosen Master and Wardens is Void and bad as being repugnant to the Charter But the said Jacob Ilive admitting that the said By Law had subsisted upwards of Eighty years, and that during all that time the Election had been in the Manner in which the present Master and Wardens Chosen by the Court had been Elected, The Chamberlain was of opinion that such long and uniform Custom was sufficient to govern his Determination upon the pont before him and accordingly refused to Inroll the Indentures. ---
