Timperley, C.H. (1842), p.529

1660, May 17. A precept from the lord mayor, directed to the master and wardens of the company, was read; requiring that if the king, at his return to his kingdom, shall please to pass through the city, ten of the most grave, tall, and comely personages of the company, well horsed, and in their best array or furniture of velvet, plush, or satin, with chains of gold, be in readiness to attend the lord mayor, aldermen, and other citizens, for his better reception. They were accordingly nominated, and ordered to choose each of them a footman to attend him. The wardens are to deliver them coats, ribbons, and truncheons, for the occasion. Mr. Hunscott (the beadle) being very ancient, and therefore incapable of the service, ordered that John Cleaver {probably – CLEAVER, John ‹ LBT 11956 › } do carry the company’s banner on horseback on that day, with such furniture and allowance for his service as the wardens think fit; the wardens to pay Mr.Hunscott 20s. in lieu of the benefit that might accrue to him had he carried the company’s banner; and to give notice to some young freemen of the company, to serve as whifflers, who are with him to attend the livery at their stand on that day.

HUNSCOT (JOSEPH), bookseller in London; Stationers Hall, 1624-60. Son of John Hunscot, of Wardenton, co. Oxon. Apprentice to Thomas Ensor { ENSOR, Thomas ‹ LBT 06772 › } for eight years from March, 1604. [Arber, ii. 275.] Took up his freedom March 23rd, 1612. [Arber, iii. 683.] First book entry January 9th, 1624. Appointed Beadle to the Company of Stationers. Was for some time printer to the Long Parliament, in which he was succeeded by Edward Husband { HUSBANDS, Edward ( - 1679) ‹ LBT 10077 › }.

Joseph Hunscot was very active in seeking out secret presses, and in 1645 he unearthed one such press at Goodman's Fields in the East end of London. In 1649 he was appointed to assist the Masters and Wardens of the Company in carrying out the Act of that year, and seized a press belonging to Edward { CROUCH, Edward ‹ LBT 10085 › and John Crouch {Cf. – CROUCH, John ‹ LBT 08914 › & CROUCH, John (1615 - 1680) ‹ LBT 10755 › } and was allowed to retain it as a reward for his services. He was still living in 1660, when he appointed a deputy to carry the Company's banner on horseback at the entry of Charles II into the City, and was allowed 20s. for his fee.
