Further Notes
Junior Renter Warden - Before becoming senior Renter Warden in Mar 1581 Howe may have served briefly a junior Renter in 1580-81 replacing William Crooke, his immediate senior on the livery, who had begun that year as junior Renter but died before completing his term (Arber, I, 489) --- Assistantship - Greg notes that Howe must have been elected to the court between his Renter Wardenship and his first recorded attendance in Jan 1585 (G & B, xxiii). --- - Howe did not serve, and seems also not to have fined for either Wardenship or for the Mastership. His name remains at or near the bottom of lists of Assistants right up until his death. ---

HOWE (WILLIAM), printer in London, was admitted a freeman November 29th, 1556. He had entered copies of ballads as early as 1565. In 1566 he took over the printing office of Abraham Veale { VEALE, Abraham ‹ LBT 00147 › } for whom he continued to print for many years. He married in 1569 Alice Farrare { FARRARE, Alice (mar. HOWE) ‹ LBT 06393 › }. [London Marriage Licenses, p. 43.] In 1573-4 he came upon the Livery and in 1582 was Renter to the Stationers' Company. He continued to print up to about 1590 but only owned one press. His son {Abraham HOWE, Abraham ‹ LBT 08154 › } was apprenticed in 1597 and the last mention of him in the Registers is in 1603. He lived in Fleet Street and used a device which had belonged to R. Hall { HALL, Richard ‹ LBT 07712 › }, a boy with wings and a weight.
