HESTER (ANDREW), bookseller in London, was an apprentice to Robert Aylton {AYLTON, Robert ‹ LBT 28242 › } who against the rules of the City passed him over to a "foreigner" to learn his craft. Accordingly on July 11th, 1538, it was agreed that Hester should be made free of the Stationers' Company paying for his admission six shillings and eight pence, while Aylton had to pay the fees of the Master Chamberlain. [Bibl. Soc. Trans., VI, p. 19.] He was one of those for whom the editions of Bishop Hilsey's Primer were printed in 1539. In 1550 he issued a Bible in quarto printed for him at Zurich by Chr. Froschauer, and in 1551, W. Turner's Preservative agaynst the poyson of Palagius, printed by Jugge {JUGGE, Richard ( - 1577) ‹ LBT 07912 ›}. His place of business was at the sign of the White Horse in St. Paul's Churchyard. He was an original member of the Company of Stationers, but died in 1557 immediately after their incorporation. An Anne Hester {HESTER, Anne ‹ LBT 03157 ›} widow, citizen and stationer took an apprentice in 1564. [Arber, I, 251.]
