GRIFFIN (EDWARD) (LBT/07206), senior, printer in London, 1613-21; Dwelling in the Little Old Bayley near the sign of the King's Head. Son of Robert Griffin of Rydland, co. Flint, yeoman. Apprentice to Henry Conneway { CONWAY, Henry ( - 1598) ‹ LBT 08325 › }, citizen and stationer of London, for eight years from Michaelmas, 1589. He is found taking apprentices on his own account on October 3rd, 1597 [Arber, ii. 220]. A second Edward Griffen, Griffin, or Gryffyn { GRIFFEN, Edward ( - 1621) ‹ LBT 07690 › }, the son of John Griffen of Llandunes, co. Denbigh, was apprenticed to Arnold Hatfield { HATFIELD, Arnold ( - 1613) ‹ LBT 07348 › } for seven years from February 2nd, 1603/4 [Arber, ii. 276], took up his freedom February 18th, 1610/1 [Arber, iii. 683], and entered his first book on November 2nd, 1613 [Arber, iii. 534]. On the death of Melchisidec Bradwood { BRADWOOD, Melchisdecke ( - 1618) ‹ LBT 07329 › } in 1618 he secured the business of the Eliot's Court Press. His last book entry occurs on December 14th, 1620 [Arber, iv. 44], and his death took place before June 7th, 1621, when his widow {Anne – GRIFFEN, Anne (1595 - 1643) ‹ LBT 03156 › } in conjunction with John Haviland { HAVILAND, John ( - 1642) ‹ LBT 09027 › } took over the business [Arber, iv. 55].
MLT Note: McKenzie, D.F. (1961), p.16 - There were two men of this name whom it is impossible to distinguish in the apprenticeship registers. See STC, vol. 3 (1991), which has lead to an attempt to sort out these apprentices.
