GOES (HUGO), printer in York, is generally presumed to have been connected with Mathias van der Goes a printer of Antwerp, but for this there is no more evidence than the similarity of names. In 1509 he printed an edition of the York Directorium, the only specimen of his work now known. The type used in this book is an early one of W. de Worde's { WORDE, Wynkyn de ( - 1534) ‹ LBT 02699 › } which he had used at Westminster. There is good evidence for ascribing two other books to Goes as they are described in a manuscript note written by Christopher Hildyard [July 12th, 1667] in his copy of his List of Mayors etc. of York, 1664. These are a Donatus minor cum Remigio and an Accidence, both without date but bound up with a grammar printed by W. de Worde in 1506. Ames mentions a broadside belonging in his time to Thomas Martin of Palgrave "containing a wooden cut of a man on horse-back, with a spear in his right hand and a shield of the arms of France in his left 'Emprynted at Beverley in the Hyegate by me Hewe Goes' with his mark or rebus of a great H and a goose." Ames also mentions a Latin grammar printed at London which was in the Harleian Library, and to this a note of Bagford's [Harl. MS. 5974,95] may refer; "Donatus cum Remigio impressus Londoniis per me Hugonem Goes and Henery Watson { WATSON, Henry ‹ LBT 30112 › }, with the printer's device H. G." A Henry Watson was an assistant of De Worde's as early as 1509. Goes' place of business at York was in the Steengate but no sign is mentioned.
MLT Note: Duff, E.G. (1905) - an assistant of De Worde (LBT/02699) - also at York.
