EDWARDS (GEORGE), senior, bookseller in London, 16116-40; In the Old Bailey, in Green Arbour, at the sign of the Angel. Son of Richard Edwards of Sybbert, co. Oxford, yeoman. Apprenticed to Manasses Blond { BLOND, Manasses ‹ LBT 08694 › }, stationer of London, for eight years from Michaelmas, 1600, and took up his freedom in the Company on November 7th 1608 [Arber, ii, 247, iii. 683]. George Edwards made his firsst entry in the Registers on December 19th, 1616, when Ralph Mabb { MABBE, Raffe ‹ LBT 07976 › } assigned over to him the copyrights of six books [Arber, iii, 599].
He appears to have beeen in partnershiop with Jacob Bloome { BLOOME, Jacob ( - 1670) ‹ LBT 10392 › }, as in a subsequent assignment made on Jue 4th, 1621, they are stated to be jointly concerned in the copyrights [Arber, iv,54]. Edwards dealt cheifly in theological books.
MLT Note: Cf. McKerrow, R. B. &c. (1910) - where two George Edwards are somewhat confused. --- McKenzie, D.F. (1961) - Some of the apprentices bound to George Edwards (LBT/06951) after 1 Dec 1634 may in fact have been bound to George Edwards (LBT/09843).
