1827-04-11 See "Chritable Donations --- ", 1868, pp. 35-7 Jonas Davis Esq. (who died in 1827), by his will, proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, April 11th , 1827, bequeathed to his executors, George Woodfall, Esq. And Richard Taylor, Esq. The Captial sum of £9,300, £3 per Cent. Consols; upon trust, to permit his wife, Elizabeth Davis, to receive the dividends up to the day of her decease, and then he bequeathed £3,000 of the said capital stock, and all future interest and dividends thenceforth accruing therefrom, to be transferred unto or into the corporate name, style, or title of the worshipful company of Stationers, London, upon the trust following, viz. :- I give and bequeath the same to the said Corporation, under and for the express trusts and uses following, that is to say: My will is, that the yearly interest and dividends therefrom shall be divided into separate Annuities of £18 each per annum; and that the Master and court of assistants of the said Company for the time being, or the majore part of them in court assembled, at such court or courts in the year as it shall be convenient to them to appoint, do and shall pay or cause to be paid such Annuities of £18 a year, in half-yearly or quarterly payments as they shall judge best, unto as many Compositors in the art and mystery of printing, being Freemen of London, and of the age of sixty years and upwards, for and during the rest of their respective natural lives, as they the said Master and court of assistants, so assembled as aforesaid, shall in their discretion select and determine upon; and so from time to time to select and determine upon any succeeding Candidates for the same, and to pay the like annuities to such Candidate or Candidates as shall be chosen upon any vacancy or vacancies by death among the annuitants. But if at any time there should not be a sufficient number of Candidates of the age of sixty years or upwards, then I direct, and my will is, that Candidates of the age of fifty years or upwards be admitted by the like selection to the benefit of this trust; and that if there should not be a sufficient number of Candidates of the age of fifty years or upwards who are Freemen of London, then I direct that, and my will is, that non-freemen of the age of sixty years or opwars, or in failure of Condidates of that age then of fifty years or upwards, being compositors, be admitted as Condidates for the said selection, in like manner as I have directed for Freemen, and to whom, in such case, I hereby direct that the said annuities of £18 each be respectively paid. But my will is, and I expressly direct, that the said Master and court of Assistants do at the time of their receiving applications from Candidates for the said Annuities, examin and inquire whether any of them then receive, or will continue to receive, any other Pension or benefaction from or in the distribution of the said Company, or any relief whatsoever from any paris or parochial rate, and that in either of those case they do consider and declare all such applicants to be on that account disqualified for the same. * Mrs.Davis died in 1850, and the sum of £2,696 2s.1d.
