CROWLEY (ROBERT), printer in London, was a native of Gloucestershire, and was educated at Oxford, becoming a fellow of Magdalen in 1542. Coming to London in the reign of Edward VI, he set up a printing press in Ely Rents, Holborn, and printed a number of books between 1549 and 1551, including the earliest editions of Piers Plowman, and several books in Welsh, printed for William Salesbury. On Mary's accession he fled to Frankfurt. On his return in the reign of Elizabeth, being in holy orders, he was presented with several livings, becoming finally rector of St. Giles, Cripplegate. In 1578 he was made a freeman of the Stationers' Company by redemption, and though he does not seem to have actively engaged in printing, he is found taking apprentices in 1580 and 1584. In 1586 he gave the annual sermon before the Company. He died June 18th, 1588, and was buried in St. Giles' Church. [D.N.B.]
MLT Note: Entered Magdalen College, Oxford, about 1534 - proceded B.A. in 1540. --- Ordination in September 1551.
