COOKE (TOBY), bookseller in London, 1577-99; The Tiger's Head in St. Paul's Churchyard. Son of James Cooke of London, yeoman. Apprentice to John Harrison { HARRISON, John ( - 1616) ‹ LBT 07614 › } for twelve years from Christmas, 1564; took up his freedom on January 14th, 1576/7 [Arber, i. 254; ii. 673]. Cooke made his first book entry in the Registers on September 11th, 1578 [Arber, ii. 337]. He dealt chiefly in theological literature. In January, 1597/8, he was chosen Beadle to the Company of Stationers in the room of John Wolfe { WOLFE, John ‹ LBT 07327 › }, but a year later he appointed John Hardy { HARDIE, John ( - 1612) ‹ LBT 07224 › } as his deputy. In May, 1598, he assigned most of his copyrights to Richard Field { FIELD, Richard (bap. 1561 - 1624) ‹ LBT 06931 › } and Felix Kingston { KINGSTON, Felix ( - 1653) ‹ LBT 07948 › } [Arber, iii. 114]. Toby Cooke died some time in 1599, leaving a widow, Margery Cooke { COOKE, Margery ( - 1608) ‹ LBT 03146 › }, and two sons, Mathew { COOK, Mathew ( - 1607) ‹ LBT 06956 › } and Thomas. Margery Cooke made her will on June 8th, 1608. and died before July 9th. She left a bequest to Joane Lisle, the widow of her son Mathew; to Edward Blount { BLOUNT, Edward (1564 - 1632) ‹ LBT 08253 › } stationer a sum of 20s for a ring; and appointed Lawrence Lisle { LYLE, Laurence ‹ LBT 07995 › } stationer and her son Thomas her executors [Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's, Book c., f. 239].
