CAWOOD (JOHN), printer in London, was born in 1514. He was apprenticed to John Reynes { REYNES, John ( - 1542) ‹ LBT 28236 › }, and by 1541 was working on his own account in St. Paul's Churchyard, and John Byrckman { BIRCKMAN, John ‹ LBT 28358 › } was with him. In 1546 he began to print, his office being in St. Paul's Churchyard at the sign of the Holy Ghost. In 1553 he was appointed Royal printer by Maryin place of Grafton { GRAFTON, Richard ( - 1573) ‹ LBT 02592 › } and had the reversion of Wolfe's { WOLF, Reginolde ( - 1574) ‹ LBT 08802 › ] patent for printing books in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. At the time of the incorporation of the Stationers' Company he was one of the Wardens, and was Master in 1561, 1562, and 1566. Under Elizabeth he was made Royal printer, jointly with Richard Jugge { JUGGE, Richard ( - 1577) ‹ LBT 07912 › }. Cawood died in 1572, and had been three times married.
