Further Notes
Olwen Long - The will of Henry Turner [George Cates' brother-in-law, wife of the sister Frances] in 1806, makes reference to 'my worthy friends' George Cates, coachmaster of Grosvenor Mews (this must surely be GC, …, as the coachmaster [i.e. the father] had died before Frances' marriage), William Turner, Joseph Harrison, silversmith; and also his brother George Turner. On 23 Apr 1818 George Turner, Joseph Harrison and George Cates of 1 Lower John Street, Golden Square, pawnbrokers insure their property with the Sun Insurance Co. Could this be the same George? George (coachmaster) had a cousin John Cates who was a pawn broker, but there are no George's on that side of the family. In 1817 GC insured 2 properties with the Sun Ions. Co: - Grosvenore Mews & Stables for a total of £2,100. This comprised several stab les including one building 'in tenure of Prestland Stables Keeper'; - a house at 15 Mortimer Street, Cavendish Square in tenure of a dealer in straw hats valued at £450 - he inherited this property from his father. In 1830 Elizabeth insure 29 Howland Street for £1,000 with the same Company, but I have not yet found any insurance by George for his house, although his Will suggests he did insure it.
