TREADWELL NOTES - [1]

Plomer, H.R. &c. (1932), p.32

BOWLES (THOMAS), book, map, and print-seller in London, next to the Chapter House in St. Paul's Churchyard, 1712(?)-1767. Brother of John Bowles { BOWLES, John (1701 - 1779) ‹ LBT 02669 › } and evidently his senior by some years. Began publishing about 1712, perhaps earlier, as his imprint is found on an undated map of Asia engraved by Moll, and dedicated to William Lord Cowper, Lord High Chancellor, who held that office from 1705 till 1718. Again Moll's map of the North Part of Great Britain dated 1714 also has Thomas Bowles' imprint. [B.M. K.T. 4. Tab. 17 (3) (12).]

About 1725 he began to engrave maps and illustrations to books. He shared with his brother John the publication of many books and maps, and was generally referred to as the great print-seller. He died on April 8th, 1767. [Gentleman's Magazine, vol. 37.] His will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on May 15th. After his death John Bowles bought the business for his son Carington Bowles { BOWLES, Carington (1724 - 1793) ‹ LBT 02663 › }.
