BALE (JOHN), Bishop of Ossory and publisher in London, was well known as an author and antiquary. He seems to have had some of his books printed for him and sold them himself. Leland's Laboryouse Journey, printed apparently by R. Jugge { JUGGE, Richard ( - 1577) ‹ LBT 07912 › } in 1549, was to be sold by Bale in Fleet Street at the sign of the Crown next to the White friars gate, and the Actes of the Englyshe votaries, printed by A. Veal { VEALE, Abraham ‹ LBT 00147 › } in 1551, was to be sold by Bale within Paul's Chain at the sign of S. John Baptist. In spite of these colophons it is very doubtful whether he sold them himself.
