Old Bailey (1674-1834) - case of Joseph Hurt, his journeyman, on 4 Apr 1744 for stealing books from John Nourse (LBT/20707), found guilty and transported. A Thomas Davis another employee of Applebee's was the chief witness. ---

APPLEBEE (JOHN),printer and bookseller in London, (a) a little below Bridewell Bridge in Black-Fryers; (b) Fleet Ditch. 1715-1724. Printer of pamphlets and broadsides. In 1715 he printed the St. James's Evening Post, or Nightly Pacquet, "for Samuel Jackson, over against Bridewell-Bridge". He was also the printer of a Daily Journal and a Weekly Journal bearing his own name. [Timperley, p. 632.] His printing was very bad, and his type worn and old.

APPLEBEE (JOHN), printer and bookseller in London, Bolt Court, Fleet Street (1740), 1715-50. See Dictionary, 1668-1725. Applebee was still at work in 1740 in Bolt Court, Fleet Street, where he printed A general remonstrance to the whole people of England ... concerning the ensuing elections .... [B.M. T. 1110 (11).]
In 1748 he was printer to the Middlesex Court of Sessions. [Cal. of Midd. Sessions Records, Jan. 1747/8-December 1751, p. 13.] He died about the year 1750, his business being carried on by his widow Elizabeth { KNIGHT, Elizabeth (mar. APPLEBEE) (1706 - ) ‹ LBT 03006 › }.
There is also a George Appleby { APPLEBY, George ‹ LBT 28550 › – John certainly had a son named George, as his will shows, but it is not yet clear as to the identity of this person.}, printer, mentioned in the Poll-Book for the City and Liberty of Westminster for 1749 as living in Clements Lane.
