PENNOWE (JOHN),. bookbinder in London, was a native of France and came to England about 1540. He lived in St. Sepulchre's Parish and occurs in the Subsidy Roll of 1564 when he pays a tax of two shillings on goods valued at twenty. [R. of A., I, 299.] In the return of 1571 he is entered as "John Pennowe, bookbynder, denizen, borne in Fraunce, came into this realme to worke of his occupacion about xxx yeares past." [R. of A., II, 8.] In the other return of 1571 he is given as dwelling in George Alley. [R. of A., I, 423.] Although he is spoken of as a denizen, I can find no entry of him in the lists of denizations unless by any chance he could be identical with the binder following.{ Cf. PENNYS PENNYS, John (1516 - ) ‹ LBT 30078 › }

MLT Note: Duff, E.G. (1905) - wonders about an identity with John Pennys [LBT/30078]. ---
