Introduction

John Young MacFarlane was a bookbinder in London and a member of the Stationers' Company. He was apprenticed to his father, Andrew MacFarlane, in 1812 and gained his freedom in 1819. MacFarlane subsequently took on apprentices in his trade, maintaining a binding business at addresses in Poppin's Court, Fleet Street and Old Bailey during the 1820s.
