HOLDER (ROBERT), stationer in London, was originally an assistant to John Reynes { REYNES, John ( - 1542) ‹ LBT 28236 › }, who on his death in 1544 left him a legacy of ten pounds in books. Reynes also desired him to stay with Lucy Reynes { REYNES, Lucy ( - 1548) ‹ LBT 05089 › } the widow for two years to help her to get in the debts and dispose of the stock. Afterwards he was to have the option, along with Edward Sutton { SUTTON, Edward (bap. 1569 - ) ‹ LBT 08522 › }, of purchasing the trade material. On the expiration of the two years he seems to have left Lucy Reynes, or she had herself given up business, for in her will, dated April, 1548, she leaves twenty shillings to "Robert Holder, late my servant." [Plomer, Wills, pp. 6, 7, 9.] In 1549 he was settled in Paul's Churchyard, with a foreign assistant Garret Williams { WILLIAM, Garret ‹ LBT 30116 › }. [R. of A., I, p. 159.] He appears to have prospered in business and soon after the incorporation of the Stationers' Company in 1557 became one of the assistants. He interested himself largely in the affairs of the Company and his name is frequently found up to the year 1566, when he took a John Hoder { HOLDER, John ‹ LBT 07758 › } as an apprentice.
