Introduction
Thomas Scarlett was a printer and bookseller active in London during the 1590s. He was apprenticed to Thomas East from 1577 and gained his freedom in the Stationers' Company in 1586, making his first book entry in 1590. Scarlett appears to have been a contentious member of the Company, facing discipline from the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1591 for alleged illegal printing and being fined in 1593 for improper apprenticeship practices. He surrendered his copyrights to Thomas Creede in 1596 and died shortly thereafter, with his widow transferring remaining rights to Cuthbert Burby.

SCARLET (THOMAS), printer and bookseller in London, 1590-6. Son of William Scarlett of Wardon, co. Hereford, yeoman. Apprentice to Thomas East { EAST, Thomas (1540 - 1608) ‹ LBT 07395 › } for eight years from March 25th, 1577, and took up his freedom in the Company of Stationers on October 12th, 1586 [Arber, ii. 75,699]. Thomas Scarlet made his first book entry on August 17th, 1590 [Arber, ii. 558], but he appears to have been an unruly member of the Company. In 1591 he was directed to appear before the Archbishop of Canterbury, no doubt for some illegal printing [Arber, i. 548], and again in 1593 he was fined for keeping an apprentice seven years without binding him [Arber, ii. 864]. On August 9th, 1596, he surrendered some of his copyrights to Thomas Creede { CREEDE, Thomas ‹ LBT 07400 › } [Arber, iii. 68]. He must have died soon afterwards, as his widow {- name not known SCARLET, (Unknown) ‹ LBT 30746 › } surrendered her rights to Cuthbert Burby { BURBY, Cuthbert ( - 1607) ‹ LBT 08823 › } on September 6th, 1596. According to Sir J. Lambe, Ralph Blower { BLOWER, Ralph ( - 1626) ‹ LBT 08574 › } and George Shaw { SHAWE, George ‹ LBT 08681 › } bought the printing business of Henry [? Thomas] Scarlet [Arber, iii. 702].
