Introduction
John Porter was a bookseller active in London during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He was apprenticed to John Cuthbert in 1568 and gained his freedom through the Stationers' Company. Porter was particularly active as a publisher and bookseller from 1587 onwards, with his first book entry recorded in October of that year. He was associated with numerous prominent members of the London book trade and specialized in publishing theological works.

PORTER (JOHN), bookseller in Cambridge, 1576 (?)-1608; Great St. Mary's. Was probably the John Porter of Haslingfielde, co. Cambridge, who was apprenticed for eight years to John Cuthbert { CUTBERTE, John ‹ LBT 07278 › }, citizen and stationer of Cambridge, in 1568 [Arber, i. 375]. There is no record of his appointment as stationer to the University; but his name appears in a list of privileged persons of the University circa 1592-4 [Bowes, Univ. Printers, 336], and books were printed for him and Legatt in 1595, etc., and for him and Leonard Greene { GREENE, Leonard ‹ LBT 10651 › } in 1607. He lived in the parish of Great St. Mary's certainly from 1589 [Foster's Churchwardens' Accounts], and in 1593 joined with John Legatt in prosecuting John Tidder for selling books in the Cambridge market [Bowes, Univ. Printers, 296]. He died in 1608 and his will is at Peterborough.

Cambridge, yeoman, apprentice to John Cuthbert { CUTBERTE, John ‹ LBT 07278 › }, stationer of London, for eight years from Christmas, 1568 [Arber, i. 375]. His first book entry was made on October 19th, 1587 [Arber, ii. 476]. He was associated with Thomas Gubbyn { GUBBIN, Thomas ( - 1626) ‹ LBT 08652 › }, Robert Bourne { BOURNE, Robert ‹ LBT 08716 › }, Thomas Man { MAN, Thomas ( - 1625) ‹ LBT 07630 › }, Ralph Jackson { JACKSON, Ralph ( - 1601) ‹ LBT 07364 › }, Samuel Macham { MACHAM, Samuel ( - 1615) ‹ LBT 08689 › }, Mathew Cooke { COOK, Mathew ( - 1607) ‹ LBT 06956 › } and Leonard Green { GREENE, Leonard ‹ LBT 10651 › }.
