BOURMAN (NICHOLAS), printer in London, commenced work in 1539 when he issued an edition of Stanbridge's Accidence [J.R.L.], identical, except for the colophon, with one issued by James Gaver { GAVER, James ( - 1545) ‹ LBT 28399 › }. In the same year he issued An introduction for to lerne to reckon with the penne. [Bodl.] His latest book was Newes of an horryble earthquake of 1542, and besides these he issued five other works. His address was in Aldersgate Street, and he used as a device a geometrical design containing his initials, almost identical with that used by John Hertford { HERFORD, John ‹ LBT 28417 › }. Bourman was probably a relative of Richard Stevenage, or Boreman, last abbot of St. Alban's, whose initials R.S occur in Hertford's device and who was the patron of the St. Alban's press. It seems probable that Bourman took up Hertford's work in the interval between the latter's leaving St. Alban's in 1539 and recommencing in Aldersgate Street in 1544. Bourman, after ceasing to print, continued as a stationer and on the incorporation of the Stationers' Company in 1557 was twenty-seventh on the list. He subscribed to the collections made for the hall and joined with William Hill { HILL, William ‹ LBT 07740 › } in presenting a window. In 1558 he was an assistant and one of the renters and continued in that office until 1560, after which date his name does not occur.
