MAYNMOUR or MYNDMER (ROMAYN), printer in London, was born at Rouen in Normandy, but came to England about 1553. He was for a considerable time an assistant to John Day{ DAY, John (1522 - 1584) ‹ LBT 07316 › } at Aldersgate. He is mentioned in the full Return of Aliens in 1571 [R. of A., I, 421], "Romyn Maynmour, printer, Frenche man borne, and Frauncis { MAYNMOUR, Frances ‹ LBT 06412 › }, his wyfe, beinge a denizon, hathe bene in this realme xviij yeres, and in this ward [Grenes Rentes, Farringdon Without] vii yeres." He is mentioned in 1576 with a son Josias, and again in 1582. [R. of A., II, 171, 249.] In 1591 though his name occurs in the Subsidy Roll, he is marked as "Not to be founde." [R. of A., II, 439.] Though he is spoken of as a denizen, his name is not found in the lists of denizations. He apparently was never in business on his own account, for throughout his career he is never entered as possessing any goods, but simply pays the poll-tax of four pence which was levied on all foreign workmen assistants.
