DANVILLIER, DUBLIER, or DUBLE (HUBERT), letterfounder in London, came to England about 1551. In 1562 he was living in Blackfriars, and is entered as Hubertus Danvillier, fondeur de lettres. [R. of A., I, 290.] In 1571 he is entered as Hubarde Duble, Frenche, beinge a howsholder, a denizon, of occupacion a founder of lettres hathe bene in this realme xxtie yeres, and in this warde [Shoe Lane, Farringdon Without] vii yeres. [R. of A, I, 421.] In the other list of 1571 he is entered Hubert Dublier, borne in France, a denizen, came into this realme about xx yeares past: he is a founder of lettres for printers, he came to get his lyvinge. [R. of A., II, 5.] In 1582-3 he is entered as Hubert Devel, founder of letters, of the French Church. [R. of A., II, 300.] In 1562 an Anthony d'Anvillier, also a typefounder, is mentioned in the list of members of the French Church. He took out letters of denization May 30th, 1567.
