MARLER (ANTHONY), of London, was a wealthy member of the Haberdashers' Company who assisted Grafton {Richard - GRAFTON, Richard ( - 1573) ‹ LBT 02592 › } and Whitchurch {Edward WHITCHURCH, (Unknown) ‹ LBT 02986 › } with money to print Bibles. In 1540 he presented a copy on vellum of the April edition to Henry VIII. [B. M.] Cromwell, who favoured the printers Grafton and Whitchurch, had the sole right of giving permission to print the Bible, and on his death Marler applied for an exclusive privilege which was granted him in 1541 to run for four years. In April, 1541, the Privy Council settled the price of the Bibles at ten shillings unbound and twelve bound, and in May, in answer to Marler's petition who represented that he should be ruined unless his Bibles were sold, issued a proclamation to compel all churches to provide themselves at once with a Bible.
