GROWTE or GROYAT (JOHN), stationer in London, was a native of Normandy and took out letters of denization on October 1st, 1535. [Pat. 27 Hen. VIII, p.1, m. 16.] He carried on business "within the Blackfriars, next the church door." Between 1532 and 1534 he had three editions of the Sarum Horae printed for him at Paris by Yolande Bonhomme, widow of Thielman Kerver, and one edition of the York Horae printed at Rouen by Nicholas le Roux in 1536. In 1541 he is mentioned in the Returns of Aliens as a bookbinder dwelling in the Parish of St. Anne's Ludgate and in 1544 as dwelling in Blackfriars; in both cases he is taxed on goods valued twenty pounds. [R. of A., I, pp. 67, 94.] In 1549 he is again entered in the Parish of St. Martin's Ludgate.
