MARTYNE (WILLIAM), printer in London, is first mentioned in 1552. "June 7. William Marten, printer, being brought before the Lordes for printing a seditious ballet set forth by one John Lawton, was this day bounde in recognisaunce of one hundreth poundes to appere every weeke once before theyr Lordshippes untill they shall take farther ordre with hym, and in the meane tyme to bring in as many of the same ballates as he may cume by." [Acts of the Privy Council, N.S., vol. iv, p. 69.] Martyne was an original member of the Stationers' Company. Between November, 1560, and March, 1561, he had a license to print The hurte of herynge of masse and this was printed for him by W. Copland { COPLAND, William ‹ LBT 07238 › }. In it he gives his address "joyninge to the mydle North dore of Paules, at the syne of the blacke boye." In 1562-63 he was fined with many others for selling Nostradamus and apparently died soon after, as his widow Joan { MARTEN, Joan ‹ LBT 03199 › } took an apprentice in December, 1564.
